Arnaiz and the Osteoarthritis Foundation International (OAFI) sign an agreement to create spaces adapted to people with arthritic disease and osteoarthritic pathologies

Madrid, June 26th 2024. Arnaiz,  a leading firm in urban planning and global real estate development, has reached an agreement with the OAFI Foundation (Osteoarthritis Foundation International), the first and only international foundation aimed exclusively at people with this pathology worldwide, to launch the OAFI SPACE project. This initiative consists of the creation of a technical team aimed at jointly developing spaces adapted to the needs of people with osteoarticular pathologies, such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis or sarcopenia.

This agreement formally establishes the technical team, made up, on the part of Arnaiz, by the head of Architecture and Design, the architect David Rubio; and by the advisor to the Studies and Research Area Dr. Andrés Palazón. On the part of the Osteoarthritis International Foundation, the alliance has been signed by its president Dr. Josep Vergés; and by the director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Dr. José Luís Baquero Úbeda.

The main mission of the OAFI SPACE programme is to reconfigure spaces according to the activities and needs of people with reduced mobility; to attend to people’s needs for space, improve their quality of life and care for their joint health; and to increase the quality and safety of the spaces in which we live and work. The technical team made up of members of Arnaiz and OAFI will direct their work towards achieving the goals, with the idea that physical spaces should be adapted to people with the aim of providing them with healthy living conditions that allow them to carry out basic activities of daily living (BADL in occupational therapy).

In Spain, one in four people over the age of 20 suffers from a rheumatic pathology, according to OAFI statistics. These diseases are still unknown to the population, which means that prevention and treatment are delayed. 90% of our time is spent indoors. In 2030, 35% of the Spanish population will be over 65 years of age, a figure that will rise to 50% by 2050. The demographic ageing society is facing makes new measures necessary to ensure an optimal quality of life for the ageing population.
